RentalCover provides complete protection against theft and costly damage to your rental vehicle, all at significant savings.Get the peace of mind that comes from knowing that a small scrape won’t turn into thousands of dollars of repair costs and fees. We provide even more complete protection than the loss or collision damage waiver offered by leading rental car companies, at a fraction of the price.

Even if you have supplementary protection from your credit card your coverage won't be as extensive as RentalCover.com:

Flat tires, cracked windshields, damaged headlights, lost keys, and towing.

Sky-high charges added to your repair bill, including fees for loss of use, processing, relocation and towing.

Complete coverage for all authorized drivers (such as your spouse) if they are listed on the rental agreement.

Rentals for more than 30 days.

Plus, RentalCover will cover you for other rented vehicles that your personal car insurance or credit card may exclude, such as full size sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, recreational vehicles, motorhomes, camper vans, car shares, and courtesy cars.

Your car rental insurance questions answered

What is rental car insurance excess?

Rental car excess covers the additional amount you are liable for if your hired car is damaged or stolen. Excess is the amount you must pay out of your own pocket, as it is not covered by a rental car company's insurance.

If your hired car is damaged and has a rental agreement with a $4,000 excess, you must pay out-of-pocket for damages up to $4,000 before your rental agreement coverage kicks in.

However, with our rental car insurance excess, you are covered for this excess up to your protection limit. You will be reimbursed up to your policy’s limit.

See here for more information.

How does insurance work with rental cars?

Rental car insurance typically works by giving the renter options to cover damages and other liabilities. Usually, basic rental company insurance that covers third-party damage or theft is included with the rental. However, this basic insurance comes with a high excess that you, as a renter, must pay in the event of an incident.

With RentalCover, you have coverage for rental car insurance excess, which reduces your out-of-pocket payment in the event of an accident or other incident. You also have protection for incidents that basic insurance may not cover, such as windshield damage or lost keys.

Is rental car insurance worth it?

Yes, car excess insurance is worth it. We provide protection for potentially extreme rental company excess fees if your hired car is damaged or stolen. Without rental vehicle excess insurance, you could face very high costs if an incident occurs.

What does car rental insurance not cover?

Exactly what a car rental insurance policy doesn’t cover can change depending on the policy. RentalCover specifically does not cover:

  • When you are ‘at-fault’ for injuries and damages.

  • Damage from negligence.

  • Unauthorised drivers.

  • Reckless or negligent driving.

  • Vehicle types such as supercars, high-end sports cars, motorcycles or quadbikes. You can see more restrictions here.

  • Vehicle modifications such as child seats, bike rack attachments.

What types of rental vehicles do you cover?

RentalCover insurance can cover the following types of vehicles:

  • Cars

  • 4x4s

  • Motorhome/RVs

  • Campervans

  • Minibuses

  • Caravans

Please note that cover on 4x4s, motorhomes/RVs, campervans, minibuses, and caravans may be restricted by country. You can choose your vehicle type when you create a quote on our website.

Does my credit card cover rental car insurance?

Many credit cards do cover rental car insurance. However, relying on your credit card could mean paying thousands of dollars out of your own pocket. For US residents, your credit card likely provides secondary car rental insurance that only kicks in after you make a claim through your personal auto insurance. This may lead to a rate increase.

Credit card coverage often has an additional list of exclusions, including:

  • Specific damages like damage to windshields or undercarriages.

  • Damage caused by additional drivers.

  • Lost keys.

  • Roadside repair costs.

  • Long-term rental.

  • Any fees your rental company may add to your repair bill.

With RentalCover, you have more comprehensive protection for less cost.

Can I change or cancel my coverage if my travel plans change?

Yes, you may modify your coverage or cancel for a refund up until the time that you pick up your rental vehicle. You may extend your coverage at any time.

What do I do if I plan to travel to multiple countries?

RentalCover extends coverage for any other countries that you visit. If you're travelling to multiple countries, simply enter the first Country of Travel into the quote form!

Are additional drivers covered under my policy?

Yes, additional drivers who are on the rental car agreement with you are covered free of charge. You may need to inform us of the additional drivers' names, pursuant to the terms of your policy. Please note that the rental company may charge a small 'additional driver' fee.

How do I make a claim?

We take the stress out of the claim process with concierge-level service. We strive to get your claim resolved and paid within three business days (upon approval). You can make an easy claim online here, in any language.

We’ll ask you to provide relevant documents like a copy of your rental vehicle agreement, a photo of your driver’s licence, a repair invoice and any other evidence we require. In a small number of cases, we may also have a few follow-up questions to ask you.
