Your car rental insurance questions answered
What is rental car insurance excess?
Rental car excess covers the additional amount you are liable for if your hired car is damaged or stolen. Excess is the amount you must pay out of your own pocket, as it is not covered by a rental car company's insurance.
If your hired car is damaged and has a rental agreement with a $4,000 excess, you must pay out-of-pocket for damages up to $4,000 before your rental agreement coverage kicks in.
However, with our rental car insurance excess, you are covered for this excess up to your protection limit. You will be reimbursed up to your policy’s limit.
How does insurance work with rental cars?
Rental car insurance typically works by giving the renter options to cover damages and other liabilities. Usually, basic rental company insurance that covers third-party damage or theft is included with the rental. However, this basic insurance comes with a high excess that you, as a renter, must pay in the event of an incident.
With RentalCover, you have coverage for rental car insurance excess, which reduces your out-of-pocket payment in the event of an accident or other incident. You also have protection for incidents that basic insurance may not cover, such as windshield damage or lost keys.
Is rental car insurance worth it?
What does car rental insurance not cover?
Exactly what a car rental insurance policy doesn’t cover can change depending on the policy. RentalCover specifically does not cover:
When you are ‘at-fault’ for injuries and damages.
Damage from negligence.
Unauthorised drivers.
Reckless or negligent driving.
Vehicle types such as supercars, high-end sports cars, motorcycles or quadbikes. You can see more restrictions here.
Vehicle modifications such as child seats, bike rack attachments.
What types of rental vehicles do you cover?
RentalCover insurance can cover the following types of vehicles:
Cars
4x4s
Motorhome/RVs
Campervans
Minibuses
Caravans
Please note that cover on 4x4s, motorhomes/RVs, campervans, minibuses, and caravans may be restricted by country. You can choose your vehicle type when you create a quote on our website.
Does my credit card cover rental car insurance?
Many credit cards do cover rental car insurance. However, relying on your credit card could mean paying thousands of dollars out of your own pocket. For US residents, your credit card likely provides secondary car rental insurance that only kicks in after you make a claim through your personal auto insurance. This may lead to a rate increase.
Credit card coverage often has an additional list of exclusions, including:
Specific damages like damage to windshields or undercarriages.
Damage caused by additional drivers.
Lost keys.
Roadside repair costs.
Long-term rental.
Any fees your rental company may add to your repair bill.
With RentalCover, you have more comprehensive protection for less cost.
