Cover is provided by a global panel of established insurers — including AmTrust, Intact, Nationwide and Atlas — each licensed in the jurisdictions where their protection products are sold. Every quote you receive on RentalCover displays the underwriter for your specific cover before you purchase, and the full protection wording is available in your account and emailed to you on purchase.

Who is RentalCover

RentalCover is wholly operated by Cover Genius, a global Insurtech headquartered in San Francisco, United States, with offices in New York, London, Amsterdam, and San Francisco. Cover Genius was founded in 2014.

The company has grown to more than 550 employees globally, raised more than US$150 million across five funding rounds (most recently a US$80 million Series E led by Spark Capital in 2024). RentalCover is the consumer-facing rental vehicle protection brand within that ecosystem. That scale and track record is why some of the world's largest travel and mobility platforms — including Rentalcars.com (Booking Holdings), Booking.com, Priceline, Kayak, Expedia, Trip.com and MakeMyTrip — choose RentalCover to protect their customers' rental bookings. In total, 7 of the world's top 10 rental car aggregators, OTAs and car-share platforms use RentalCover.

Our mission

RentalCover exists to make rental vehicle protection simple, fair and reliable. Rental desk waivers are confusing and overpriced, often costing twice as much as equivalent cover elsewhere, with key items like windscreens, tyres and keys quietly excluded. We sell standalone policies with the protection wording published before you buy, cover priced up to 50%† less than the desk, and a claims process that pays approximately 95% of approved claims within 3 business days. That's our standard, in every country we operate in.

Our story

• 2014 Angus McDonald and Chris Bayley were running an online travel agency when they kept hitting the same wall: every time they tried to offer their customers rental car insurance, the options were confusing, overpriced and built around the insurer rather than the traveller. So they built the alternative themselves. RentalCover.com launched out of a small Sydney office, with a single promise — standalone rental vehicle protection, priced fairly, with the wording shown before you buy.
• 2015 RentalCover sold its first policy through an inaugural partnership with Rentalcars.com, part of Booking Holdings. The team made an early call that still defines the brand today: claims would be handled in-house rather than outsourced, so every customer dealt with one team from quote to payout. The first office outside Sydney opened in London.
• 2016 to 2018 RentalCover's model resonated quickly with the travel industry. Within its first few years, 7 of the top 10 rental car aggregators, OTAs and car-share platforms globally were distributing RentalCover protection to their customers. The team expanded into the United States, opened a New York office, and was named Australia's fastest-growing company by SmartCompany in 2018.
• 2019 RentalCover achieved true global scale, expanding its protection to cover drivers in more than 220 countries and territories. This footprint was backed by an extensive network of international insurance licenses secured through parent company Cover Genius.
• 2020 The Financial Times ranked Cover Genius the #1 fastest-growing company in Asia Pacific. As global travel paused during COVID, RentalCover launched a Bushfire Appeal supporting Australian communities recovering from the 2019 to 2020 fires, and used the period to invest in its claims platform and multi-language support.
• 2022 RentalCover passed major customer milestones as international travel returned, with rental car bookings surging back across Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. Trustpilot reviews crossed five figures, with an average rating that has stayed at 4.8 stars ever since.
• 2024 RentalCover marked its 10th anniversary, having protected more than 10 million travellers across 220+ countries since launch. Parent company Cover Genius closed a US$80 million Series E round the same year, with proceeds funding continued investment in RentalCover's claims technology, AI-driven customer support and multi-currency payout capability.
• 2025 to today RentalCover continues to be one of the largest dedicated rental vehicle protection brands globally by volume, with 21,000+ Trustpilot reviews averaging 4.8 stars, claim payments available in 90+ currencies, and customer support in more than 40 languages.
