Rentals not covered by RentalCover

At RentalCover, we aim to keep our protection simple and affordable. To maintain this, we strictly limit coverage to vehicles rented through licensed, commercial car rental companies.

If you purchased your protection directly from RentalCover, please review the following requirements to ensure you're fully covered.

Note: These restrictions do not apply if you purchased RentalCover Protection through one of our authorised partners (e.g. during your booking on a travel site like Booking.com or Expedia).

What is a "licensed car rental company"?

To be eligible for coverage, your vehicle must be rented from a licensed commercial provider. We define this as a business that meets the following criteria:

  • Primary business: Their main commercial activity is renting motor vehicles to the general public.
  • Physical presence: They operate from a commercial business location (e.g. an airport counter or city office).
  • Formal documentation: They provide professional, printed rental agreements with a unique contract number.

Examples of licensed car rental companies: Hertz, Enterprise, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, and Budget.

Excluded rental types and agencies

The following categories are excluded from coverage when booking directly on RentalCover. Protection purchased for these rental types are considered invalid.

CategoryDefinitionExamples
Peer-to-peer (P2P) (Only applicable to residents from the United States and Canada)Platforms where private individuals rent out their personal vehicles. These are "car-sharing" services, not commercial rental agencies.Turo, Getaround, Uber Carshare (formerly Car Next Door).
Social media marketplacesUnofficial arrangements made via social platforms. These lack formal regulation and standard safety inspections.Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Instagram ads.
Rideshare and delivery servicesAny vehicle used for commercial "hire and reward" purposes. RentalCover Protection is for personal travel only.Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, UberEats, Grubhub.

Why are these excluded?

Traditional rental insurance is designed for standardised, commercially maintained collection of vehicles. Rideshare and marketplace rentals introduce high-risk variables such as non-standard maintenance and extreme mileage, which fall outside the scope of RentalCover Protection's coverage for personal travel use.

Excluded rental companies

In addition to the categories above, we do not cover rentals from the following rental companies due to recurring documentation or compliance issues:
