Car Rental Insurance Ireland

Complete rental guide for Ireland.

From the Cliffs of Moher to Hook Head, a rental car is one of the best ways to see Ireland, and with generally peaceful, well-maintained roads, it’s a fairly straightforward place to drive.

This guide covers what you need to know about rental car insurance in Ireland — what’s covered, what to ask for at the rental desk, and the driving rules that differ across the island.

Renting in the Republic of Ireland vs Northern Ireland

Ireland is split into two regions: the Republic of Ireland (26 counties) and Northern Ireland (6 counties, part of the UK). A few things to know before you cross between them.

  • Most rental companies allow driving on both sides of the border, usually for a cross-border fee of around €30.
  • Insurance rules and standard practices are broadly similar on both sides, but always check your specific rental agreement.
  • Road rules differ in places. For example, speed signs are in km/h in the Republic, mph in Northern Ireland.
  • Unless stated otherwise, “Ireland” in this guide refers to both regions collectively.

Understanding rental car insurance in Ireland

Every car rental in Ireland comes with basic third-party liability insurance and Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) built into the price, so you’re covered for some accident damage from day one. If your CDW extends to cover theft as well, it’s usually called Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). But CDW/LDW usually comes with a high excess and real gaps in coverage.
